Why Does My Breaker Keep Tripping? Causes and What to Do Safely

A circuit breaker is a safety device: when it trips, it is telling you something is wrong. Ignoring the message or fitting a bigger breaker without a check can turn a small problem into a real hazard.

Why breakers trip

  • Overload: too many or too powerful appliances on one circuit, such as an AC unit, heater and kettle at once.
  • Short circuit: a damaged cable or loose connection that trips the breaker as soon as it is reset.
  • Earth leakage: water reaching an appliance or socket, often shown by residual-current devices.
  • A faulty appliance: the breaker trips whenever one particular appliance runs.
  • A weak or old breaker.

What you can do safely

  1. Unplug appliances on the circuit that tripped.
  2. Reset the breaker once only.
  3. If it holds, switch appliances on one by one to find the culprit.
  4. If it trips immediately with nothing connected, do not keep trying — this needs a technician.

Warning: do not open the panel cover, and never replace the breaker with a bigger one so it “holds”. The breaker protects the cable, and upsizing it can cause dangerous overheating. If you smell burning or the panel feels hot, move away and get help immediately.
